HISTORY
Jose Corazon De Jesus Elementary School is a small school in District I, Division of City Schools, Manila and is located along N.Zamora St., Tondo, Manila. The school is under Barangay 61 Zone 5. J.C. de Jesus E.S. has a yearly average enrolment of 1,400 pupils. It employs 43 permanent teachers, five (5) support personnel and one (1) school head.
JC de Jesus ES caters mostly to children living in the slum areas from the neighboring barangays. The school can hardly attract pupils of better financial standing and academic performance due to the presence of two (2) public school and one (1) private school in the vicinity.
Jose Corazon De Jesus Elementary School was a former annex of Yangco Elementary School. It became an independent school in February 23, 1967 and was housed separately in Pascual Building. Principal then was Miss Trinidad Aquino and Mrs. Paola dela Cruz, assistant principal. There were (640) pupils, fourteen (14) classes and fourteen (14) teachers from Grades I – III.
School Year 1968 – 1969 when the school was officially declared independent fromYangco Elem. School under City Ordinance No. 15 s 1968 duly signed by Former Mayor Antonio J. Villegas on May 17, 1968. Thereon the school wasnamed Jose Corazon de Jesus Elementary School. Through the years, the school rented the lot and buildings where it was housed.
In 2003, the City of Manila under the leadership of Mayor Lito L. Atienza finally succeeded in convincing the owner of the structure to sell it for 40 million pesos. Upon purchased, the Bernabe Building was demolished to give way to a three – storey L-shaped concrete building. The new edifice houses the administration office, some ancillary services and eight (8) academic classrooms. The original plan to convert the third floor into a multi–purpose room was temporarily shelved due to shortage of classrooms.
However, in the past two (2) years, substantial improvements have been achieved. Shared management and accountability has proven beneficial to the school. Active mobilization and participation of the stakeholders in the various programs and activities of the school brought forth achievements. J.C. de Jesus Elem. School ranked 9th in the 2006 National Achievement Test (NAT) results. Its Mean Percentage Score (MPS) in the Division Test increased from 59.90% to 61.00%. However, the school’ MPS in the National Achievement Test decreased this year by 3%. This can be attributed to the shortage of classrooms brought about by the on – going construction of the new building.
Construction of new buildings and repair of the classrooms and other service areas were done. They were sponsored by the national and city government. The school has purchased classroom furnitures and fixtures. Supplementary reading materials were also purchased from the school canteen proceeds and fund raising activities initiated by the PTCA. There was a noticeable drop in the number of complaints against teachers. Sizeable increase in the attendance of pupils were discussed during parents’ assemblies and meetings. The above- mentioned achievements were manifestations that partnership between school and community can significantly raise the level of the school performance.
In the next three years, the school explored for more reforms and innovations that enhanced the present learning environment. Raising the Mean Percentage Score in the NAT and DAT took first priority. The school aimed for a gradual yearly increase of 6% in its MPS to attain a 75% proficiency at the end of School Year 2009 – 2010. To achieve such, the school’s aim is to make each child a good reader and numerate. It looked after the nutritional status of the pupils and implemented a wider feeding program. Absenteeism among all stakeholders was discouraged. A performance based incentive program was enforced.
As SY 2010 – 2011 begun, we saw a great increase in the Mean Percentage Score (MPS) in the Mid and Final Achievement Test in almost all subjects. The NAT Results was even more promising. From ranked 41 in the NAT 2009 – 2010, Jose Corazon de Jesus Elementary School ranked seven (7) in the Division and first in the District level. While for School Year 2011-2012 it ranked 11th in the Division Level and for the School year 2012 – 2013 JC de Jesus Elem. School rank 3rd in the Division Level with the leadership of the Master Teachers, Grade VI teachers and School Head Miss Lucena Padilla. These turn of events can be attributed to the stakeholders’ determination to carry out the plan of action formulated in the School Improvement Plan
